Area of Study: Belonging

An Area of Study is a concept based study, which explores your understanding of how Belonging is explored in a variety of texts.  Like most English topics, is focuses on "what" is being said (about Belonging) and "how" it is said (through the use of language forms, features and structure which shape meaning.)  For more information on the keywords and rubric, see the "Syllabus and Rubric" tab.
The Board of Studies (BOS) mandates that this study is worth 40% of your assessment.  Belonging is a common concept and English Standard and Advanced students are compared in their HSC.
In the HSC, all of Paper 1 is about Belonging.  The exam is of 2 hours length and has 10 minutes reading time.  There are 3 sections:
  • Section 1 - Reading.  You will read a series of unseen texts (which
    can be written or visual) a series of short answer questions will assess your understanding of Belonging
  • Section 2 - Writing.  You will have to write a creative piece of writing which explores your understanding of Belonging.  You might be given a visual stimulus, a story starter or sentence to be incorporated into your piece as a central idea in your writing
  • Section 3 - Extended Response.  You will have to answer a question which will assess your understanding of Belonging.  You will need to refer to your set text (chosen from the BOS English Prescriptions) as well as related text or texts.  You may be asked to write in a variety of forms, not only an essay.
